Whole urad dal lentils and kidney beans (called rajma in hindi) are used in this lentil curry. Urad dal lentils are also known as black lentils, black grams, matpe beans, mungo beans (don't confuse with mung beans!) and vigna mungo. Urad lentil/black lentil look like Mung beans, which are green, yet both have the same distinct shape. I often cook 'Tadka' at home be it 'Chicken Tadka - Dhaba Style', 'Egg Tadka' or 'Dhaba Style Fried Egg Tadka'.

Steps to make Sauteed Chicken with Whole Black Gram Lentil:
  1. Heat oil and saute the onion, ginger, garlic and green chilies till they turn slightly light brown in colour.
  2. Add the chicken, soaked urad dal and all the powdered spices. Continue to fry on a medium flame for 2-3 minutes.
  3. Now add the tomatoes and the coriander leaves and saute for another minute or two. Take off the flame and garnish. Serve as a side dish with phulkas, parathas or any deep fried Indian bread.
